The crop is now commerciallycultivated widely for its carvone rich essential oil in USA,Russia, Germany, Australia and India. The leaves of M. spicata finduse in traditional medicine’s remedy for fever, colic pain,bronchitis, stimulant and carminative. The essential oilhydrodistilled from above ground part of Mentha spicata plants isused for flavouring chewing gums, tooth paste, food products andpharmaceutical preparations . The natural population of Menthaspicata demonstrate considerable variability in morphology andchemical constituents such as carvone, limonene, linalool,piperitenone oxide, piperitone oxide, menthone, 1, 8-cineole andcarvacrol16. Another mint oil of great importance is spearmint,Mentha spicata this oil is rich source of L- carvone. Therefore,synthetic L-carvone is always in competition with this oil.Recently, china has become a key player in the production ofsynthetic L-carvone .Although synthetic L-carvone is no match fornatural spearmint oil in olfactive charaterisitics .Perfumersandfalourrists are always temped to modify L-carvone with someminor/trace chemicals and use this in their newcreations.
