Introduction
Sandal (Santalum aldum L.) is one of the mosteconomically important forest species of Kaena- taka and Tamil Nadustates. This species is the source of the world famous East IndianSandalwood oil. Santalum aldum occurs at the North to the Nilgiriin the South and 400 km horizontally from coorg in the west toKuppam in the East. The tree flourishes well from sea level up to1350mt. altitude but the formation of the heartwood seems to thebestbetween 600 and 900 mt with an annual rainfall of 850-1200mm.Thus a comparatively cool climate, moderate rainfall spread overseveral months and much sunshine seem to be the ideal conditionsfor the growth of hearwood. Attempts were made to extend sandalbeyond its natural belts. However, the wood odtained from suchtrees is ether poorly scented or without any aroma.Sandal hasbecome naturalized in some parts of Rajasthan.Maharashtra, MadhyaPradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Sandal trees heve recrntly beenintroduced in Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Manipur, Orissa and westBengal East Indian sandalwood oil is one of the oldest. Mostexpensive perfumery raw materials still in use in modem perfumery.Steam distillation of the heartwood and roots of evergreen treeshave an oil with a characteristic, long –lasting, inimitable ,multifaceted very pleasant, sweetwoody animalic milky-nutty odourwith excellent fixative properties20 . sandal wood oil is obtainedby simple and efficient method of steam distillation of heartwoodof Santalum aldum. Sandalwood is powered and sieved to get meshsize of 12 to 36 and then charged into copper or stainless still.Steam is bubbled up at the base under pressure 20 – 60 psi for100-120 hr. The crude oil floating on the surface of distillate isskimmed off and filtered. On an average, sandalwood yields about5-6% of oil . The tree is native to India , Sri Lanka, Indonesiaand surrounding islands. Indonesia and India are the majorproducres of sandal wood oil . The sandalwood-like odour type is ofgreat importance for the fragrance industry .
