 The oil of patchouli is obtained by steamdistillation of dried leaves  of Pogostemom cablin (Blanco)Benth . Syn. P. patchouli Pellet

Var. sauvis Hook.(Femily labiatae). The oil is known toblends well with other essential oil, sandalwood, geranium andlavender . Patchouli oil is considered to be the cheapest fixativeamong the natural source, and enhances the life of any perfume towhich it is part. Since, there is no synthetic chemical substituteto patchouli oil it further enhances the value and unique positionpatchouli oil in perfumery and cosmeticindustry. 

 

Propagation-

                      Patchouli is propagated by stem cutting . For best results, apicalcuttings 10-15 cm long  with 3-4 leaves are taken fromwell  developed branches . These cuttings are either used forraising nursery or can be planted directly in thefield.

 Oilproperties

 

Patchouli oil has a rich musky-sweet, strong spicy andherbaceous smell. It is light yellow to dark brown in color and isthick oil.  

 

Origin of patchoulioil

 It is aperennial, bushy plant that grows up to 1meter (3 feet) high, witha sturdy, hairy stem and large, fragrant, furry leaves,about four inches long and five inches across. It haswhitish flowers tinged with purple.  

The plant is native toMalaysia andIndia, where it is known as ''puchaput''.The word is derived from Hindustanword ''patch'' meaning ''green'' and ''ilai'' meaning''leaf.''  

 It was placed between Indian cashmere shawls enroute to Victorian England, toprotect the merchandise from moths, and without this signaturesmell of dried patchouli leaves the shawls could not be soldin England. 

 In the East, it is used in potpourris and sachetsand place between linen, to keep bedbugs away, and it is the smellof patchouli oil, mixed with that of camphor, that gives Indian inkits characteristic smell.
